Astronauts have thrown a wooden satellite out of the ISS into space. The very notion puts me in mind of THE WOODEN SPACESHIPS by Bob Shaw. The conceit of the Wooden Spaceships novels is two planets that orbit around a shared centre of gravity, close enough to each other that their atmospheres actually connect. Hence, you can travel from one planet to another with hot-air balloons and vessels made out of very hard wood.
Before embarking on his tales the mate had the habit of drawing a rotten chip of wood from his pocket and holding it to his right ear like a telephone receiver. He would listen to the chip for a minute or two, closing his eyes as if asleep, while under his eyelids his pupils quivered to and fro.
