This was Saturday’s work. Digging out and piling up a cairn of broken pavers. There’s another cairn of hardcore rubble three metres away from this, and I also had to cut down a Buddleia with the chainsaw (leaving us three Buddleias) and renovate a pond.

Sunday was a road trip, which suited me as my fingers still feel bruised from all that and the clocks sprang forward, which always leaves me groggy for a couple of days. Reduced production intent for a week meant we had extra time for a drive around the countryside in the spring sunshine.

OPERATIONS: I think this week will be just one completed piece and some dev: end of the financial year, and the good light returning to the garden points out just how much I have to do out there. Newsletter went out yesterday, which means I have to start this coming Sunday’s newsletter.
STATUS: Last night I succeeded in making a sauce for venison steaks and roasted portobello mushrooms using red wine, butter and O’Donnell’s Tough Nut Moonshine, so I’m all good today.

THINKING ABOUT:

The Filofax was a classic yuppie accessory – potentially disastrous for those who opted not just to organise their whole life in its pages but to add plastic holders for their credit cards (a feature added at the request of Diane Keaton). The idea dated back to a 1910 product called Lefax, designed for power plant engineers in Philadelphia, and was used by engineers for many decades, as well as by the army (the Filofax archives show their product on an early military expedition to Everest).
