A handful of the month’s first gold leaves on the surface of the pond like spilled coins on a countertop. The first apple off the Bloody Ploughman tree: rainwashed, dark scarlet, sweet and pearlike. Standing in the kitchen comparing it with the last slices of perfumed clean Braeburn apple that fell the week before.
