Some animal knocked over one of the apple trees — all the labels were destroyed by animals, but I’m pretty sure it’s the Discovery – and one of the apples on it was taken off. I picked it up and sliced it up for us before herself went out for the day. She said “it tastes the way apples did when we were kids.” Crispy, insanely juicy, clean, complex and slightly tart. There are two left on the tree, and I’m going to give them another week before I try to pull them. But this one seemed very close to ripe. The first good apple from this garden.
OPERATIONS:
My old Apple keyboard case for the iPad died. I decided I wanted the replacement to have a backlit keyboard, to make it easier to be able to write on my lap while sitting downstairs in the evening. I doubt this is as good as the Apple case? But it was substantially cheaper and, unlike the Apple case, backlit.
Today I need to hit my quota and write a short piece DC Comics asked me to do for a tribute to John Cassaday. I’m not looking forward to that for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is trying to do him justice in a hundred words.
STATUS: Inbox 113, and I need to attend to that later. Seven and a half hours sleep, because I was trying to write that damn piece in my head instead of sleeping.

THINKING ABOUT:
All the idyllic pictures of a primitive humanity busily gathering fruits and berries are based on one absence—the absence of predators: as though humanity didn’t need to protect itself. Quite different is the picture of a paradise that, in order to be so, needs to protect itself with a “fence,” pairi-daësa. It is paradise only if it includes a barrier, beyond which stretches pure nature.
