On Saturday I walked five miles and burned more than 4000 calories just working in the garden. I took a long weekend to do cutting, shredding and planting, stopping in the middle on Friday to repair a chainsaw. Apparently I am the kind of person who repairs chainsaws now. Purple barberry, hawthorn and blackberry are in, penstemons and geraniums, the Siberian dogwoods and the extra rhubarb crown will go in midweek, the viburnum’s hacked back and the holly has been lollipoped. Whatever’s happened in the world, I am a good 72 hours behind it.

1230pm and I’ve only just gotten into the office. Deliveries and phone conferences incoming. Plans for the week already thoroughly derailed, and I have a pleasant ache in my muscles. Tired and alive, living the spring.
