If the weather holds, I will be outside for the rest of the day splitting branches with an axe and shoving cuttings through the garden shredder. These are not things you can do with your phone in your hand. Nor with notifications blaring through your earbuds. It’s an entirely offline kind of job, physical and sensory. The earbuds go in only to cancel the noise of the shredder. Sometimes I play podcasts while I’m running the shredder, and Melvyn Bragg sounds like he’s talking to me from inside a cement mixer.
