Processed CASTLEVANIA materials, HEAVEN’S FOREST materials, had phone calls, many many emails, broke down the front of a script that was giving me shit, marked up boards, rethought my schedule based on some overnight messaging, basically a lot of busywork that amounted to jack shit in terms of actual produced words, and I was on my way to bed when I realised I hadn’t cleared a design document off my desk, so I’m doing that now and g’night

We’re having some infrastructure issues out here on the Thames Delta, and the internet has been going down a LOT today, so I’m calling it for the day and am settling in for the night. Today has looked like:

Provisionally secured collaborator for one module of PROJECT GENEVA
HEAVEN’S FOREST design tranche processed, annotated and replied to
More HF notes and conversation
PROJECT GENEVA organisation
big set of CASTLEVANIA S4 notes done and sent
internet cut out A LOT
Into BATMAN’S GRAVE 9 and notes on the three issues to follow, envisioning the last four issues as one piece

Very little of what you’d call actual writing, more laying of foundations and testing ideas and dropping down dialogue and general directions. I’ve got a couple of days on this before I have to go back into HEAVEN’S FOREST 107 and the GENEVA bible.

So, while I’ve got a little signal, I’m going to buy a couple of books before it dies for good and call it a day. G’night, reader.

I am weirdly wiped out. Long week? Who even knows what weeks are any more. Today:

HEAVEN’S FOREST 106-A written and filed.
Casting document for HEAVEN’S FOREST – this is where I briefly outline characters and personalities so our casting director and series directors can get a handle on casting the characters and use the text to work with agents etc. I actually get to step back from that process a bit now that I’ve written the document, on this one, and let other people try to make sense of my gibberish
Sent a final update to publisher on a bunch of things I was gonna do there that now can’t be done because covid, collapse, etc.
Made a start on the newsletter, and updated editorial office on PROJECT GENEVA.

I feel about 12 hours’ sleep coming on. I’ve just cleaned the kitchen and washed up every pot and pan, my heart rate’s all over the place and I’m calling it. That was this week. Stay well, reader. G’night.

Um, yeah. Suddenly got very busy with a thing. See you tomorrow.

Today was fiddling around with two scripts, probably not more than four actual pages written but a lot of notes and thinking, and sometimes that’s just how the day goes. And some production notes, checking in with a couple of people over email, and, well, FAQ: we’re deferring production on the last two volumes of INJECTION until 2021, because corona-related business impact is going to be insurmountable for that project until the end of the year. And then we’ll blast through the whole thing in 2021.

So I’m going to leave you with this lovely record by Keith Berry as a little night music and bail out. G’night.

Coming in for a landing. Feels like it was a long day.

Today was mostly An Email Day.
Conversations with manager and co-producer on PROJECT VERSAILLES, which, it appears, is getting ordered.
MANY conversations.
Starting the deal process.
Official pass on other thing, will reset that pitch next week.
Checking in with artists, mostly on a basis of “nothing’s gonna happen” and making sure they have work.
(I had a lot of plans for this year. Not so much now.)

That should be the end of the crush. Tomorrow, I hope to be an actual writer, and start and finish some scripts.

Also I watched some of FANTASTIC VOYAGE from 1966, because that opening act still amuses me. Underground secret base in NYC full of secret-programme soldiers shooting around the place in golf carts. G’night.

Ack. Not enough got done today. Work log:

HEAVEN’S FOREST design notes
Pulling my notes together for second draft HEAVEN’S FOREST 106, and a third pass I want to do on 101 to alter the pacing.
Phone interview with Entertainment Weekly for CASTLEVANIA season 3.
Long phone conversation with manager.
Processed deal memo.
Conversation with Kevin Kolde about works in progress.
Written answers to questions for an acquaintance’s book.
Conversation with lawyer re: deal processes.
Checked in with writer friend who’s attached to one of those projects in deal process.
Checked in with Batman group editor at DC, various artists I needed to ensure were doing okay in the middle of all this.
Read a friend’s new graphic novel, which is brilliant, which depressed me no end.
Got about four pages of script done, well below where I needed to be.

Tomorrow is likely to be all about mopping up all the stuff that didn’t get done or closed today.

Finishing the night with this. G’night.

Light day, which was just as well. Just a lot of messaging.

Set a time for a press interview about CV3.
Checked in with manager about a deal caught in the lockdown.
Quick CV4 design notes
Started breaking down the story for an eight-page short for DC.
Incepted Kevin Kolde into thinking he’s gone mad
Shouted at Declan Shalvey for a while
Checked in with manager about two other things
(I talk to my manager a lot)
Rewatched MARGIN CALL, because JC Chandor is an excellent screenwriter
Signed off on a promotion idea generated at NX

And did some thinking.

I leave you with something to watch: a short film adapting Borges’ DEATH AND THE COMPASS, which I was reminded of when I tripped over a cheap DVD copy of the later adaptation by Alex Cox. This one stars the incomparable Nigel Hawthorne. G’night.
