THE MODERNIST 55 arrives to improve my day.
Comments closed‘For this issue, I chose ORDINARY as the theme and picked writers, poets, photographers and illustrators I’d like to be stuck in a (paternoster) lift with.
In a world where AI is blurring boundaries between genuine pizzazz and code-generateddigital sparkle, ordinary is nourishing. It’s cheese on toast. A three-pin plug. Great social housing. A shelf. Only an idiot mistakes the ordinary for average. Behind every slice of excellent ordinaryness is a brainiac on a mission. There’s nowhere to hide shit workmanship in something simple, something ordinary.
Overlooked, plain and occasionally boring, I want you to pause and examine that wooden clothes peg. Study a milk bottle. Think again about pebbledash. Cast aside the jazzy stuff for a minute and put the ordinary on a pedestal. As Ferris Bueller once said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

I have bought myself blue jeans for the first time in thirty years. I have already had my mid-life crisis so I presume this is encroaching dementia.
TODAY:
- Bloomberg Daybreak: Europe Edition (China-UK Hacking Exposed, Reeves Needs £50 Billion, Griffin: AI Lacks Edge)
- Politico London: “You’re in spy territory now.”
- Donald Trump said he authorised a covert Central Intelligence Agency operation in Venezuela.
OPERATIONS: Moving on to new things today and pretending I don’t have two unfinished scripts on deck. And figuring out Adobe Sign again.
STATUS: 8hrs 31m sleep, and it’s time to admit to myself that I have no scripting energy left. Inbox 87. Just had to ask the Echo what day it is.

So, this is an interesting thing. NORD Fragrances offer solid scents and container casess for them, which all come packaged in recyclable card. You buy the scents as a little balm-like puck, smear a bit off on your finger, wait for it to warm a little, and then apply. I’m using the Marine Mist right now, as it pairs well with my usual beard oil, and I have a Bonfire to try later on. The case is metal – you just swap out the little pucks. From the Netherlands. Clever idea.

Todd Blackwood was kind enough to send me his NOSFERATU graphic novel and accompanying works. These were a Kickstarter project and I’m not sure if any more copies are available, but maybe ask him? It’s my hope that a comics publisher picks this up for a mass-market edition one day soon. Gorgeous books.

I get this imported from the States, and it’s my favourite beard oil. Sunstone is very marine and makes me think of walking on the shore in winter. I love it.
But! This time they sent a very large sampler of a beard oil called Jol, and, I have to tell you, it’s amazing. It’s a seasonal oil for Yule – smells floral in the bottle but as soon as you massage it into the beard, it’s wood, smoke and Christmas spices. I was absolutely shocked at how it transformed. If you’re in the market for such things, Fires Of Freyja is the place to go.
